Age-appropriate training drills that focus on fundamental skills without risking injury.
Training young cricketers requires a different approach than coaching adults. The focus should be on developing fundamental skills, building love for the game, and ensuring safety. Here are some of our favorite drills for under-14 players.
The “Target Bowling” drill helps young bowlers develop accuracy. Place targets (cones or markers) on a good length, and have players aim for them. Make it competitive by awarding points for hitting targets.
“Shadow Batting” is excellent for developing proper technique without the pressure of facing a ball. Players practice their shots in front of a mirror or with a coach observing, focusing on footwork, head position, and bat swing.
The “Catch and Throw” drill improves fielding skills. Players form a circle and throw the ball to each other, calling out the name of the receiver. This develops hand-eye coordination and communication.
“Continuous Running” between wickets teaches players how to judge quick singles and turn efficiently. Set up two sets of stumps and have players run between them, focusing on low turns and calling.
“Soft Ball Drills” for catching help overcome fear of the ball. Start with tennis balls or soft balls before progressing to leather balls. This builds confidence and proper catching technique.
Remember, at this age, having fun should be the priority. Keep drills short, varied, and engaging to maintain
